The journey towards a safer and more digitally secure Indonesia is a collective effort—one that begins with education, awareness, and empowerment. At Cisometric, we believe that nurturing future professionals and raising public awareness about digital security are pivotal to tackle cybersecurity challenges.

On December 13, 2024, Cisometric proudly collaborated with Generation Girl, a leading non-profit organization focused on empowering young women through education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), as well as Amartha. Together, we hosted the Cybersecurity Masterclass on Personal Data Privacy (PDP) as part of their Computer Science Week: Ready, Set, Code! It was a special opportunity for both organizations as we worked towards fostering the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

About the Event

The Cybersecurity Masterclass on Personal Data Privacy was held as an interactive online workshop, aiming to provide participants with a strong foundational understanding of how personal data privacy plays a vital role in today’s digital society. With the rising threat of data breaches and misuse, protecting personal information is no longer just a technical concern—it’s a fundamental necessity for individuals, organizations, and society as a whole.

The workshop was part of the Computer Science Week—an initiative dedicated to making technology education accessible, fun, and empowering. Focused on beginner to intermediate learners, the event featured a lineup of engaging materials delivered by industry professionals to help participants level up their skills and open doors to new opportunities.

Cisometric served as both a knowledge partner and mentor for the event, contributing expertise and learning materials to guide the session. The class was led by Ilafi Firsta Putri, Cisometric’s Data Privacy Consultant, who walked participants through the essentials of the topic. The Cybersecurity Masterclass specifically honed in on Personal Data Privacy (PDP)—an increasingly relevant topic following the enactment of Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Act (UU PDP).

Key Insights from the Masterclass

The class was packed with actionable knowledge, engaging discussions, and practical takeaways. Designed to simplify complex concepts and connect them to real-world scenarios, the session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of PDP and why it has become increasingly critical in today’s digital ecosystem. Here are the key insights from the session:

1. Understanding Personal Data Privacy (PDP)

The workshop kicked off by defining PDP—what it is, why it matters, and how it affects both individuals and organizations. Participants learned that personal data includes information that can identify individuals directly (such as names and ID numbers) or indirectly (through data combinations like IP addresses, financial records, and location).

With the rise of digital platforms and increased online activities, personal data has become highly valuable. This also makes it vulnerable to misuse, breaches, and cyberattacks. Understanding PDP is the first step in ensuring individuals can take ownership of their data and organizations can handle it safely and ethically.

2. The Significance of Indonesia’s PDP Law (UU PDP)

One of the major highlights of the session was a detailed discussion on UU PDP (Undang-Undang Pelindungan Data Pribadi)—a landmark regulation that is highly significant for digital security in Indonesia. Passed in 2022 and enforced in stages, UU PDP sets clear guidelines for how personal data should be collected, processed, and protected.

The workshop outlined:

  • The rights of individuals as data subjects (e.g., access, correction, and deletion of data)

  • The obligations of organizations as data controllers and processors, including obtaining consent, ensuring transparency, and implementing strong security measures

  • The legal and financial consequences of non-compliance, such as administrative fines or criminal penalties

By providing this legal context, participants understood how UU PDP aims to create a safer and more accountable digital environment in Indonesia, aligning the nation with global data privacy standards like the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

3. The Role of Data Protection Officers (DPO) Is A Growing Career Opportunity

A key takeaway from the session was also the growing demand for DPOs—a role mandated by UU PDP for certain organizations. Participants learned that a DPO is responsible for ensuring that data protection regulations are met, overseeing data management processes, and acting as a bridge between organizations, data subjects, and regulatory bodies.

This role presents a significant career opportunity, particularly as businesses across industries strive to achieve compliance. With cybersecurity threats on the rise and stricter regulations being enforced, the need for skilled professionals in this space is currently especially high. Participants were encouraged to explore this path, as it combines technical expertise, legal knowledge, and strategic leadership—skills that are in high demand globally.

4. Why PDP Awareness is Everyone’s Responsibility

The session also emphasized that personal data privacy is not just an organizational concern—it’s everyone’s responsibility. Participants were introduced to practical steps they can take to protect their own data, such as:

On the organizational side, the workshop stressed the importance of building a strong data privacy culture through employee training, robust incident response plans, and compliance with legal requirements.

By bridging the gap between individual accountability and organizational responsibility, the session drove home the importance of collective efforts in securing data and preventing breaches.

5. The Bigger Picture: Safeguarding Indonesia’s Digital Future

More than just a discussion on laws and careers, the masterclass placed Personal Data Privacy within the broader mission of safeguarding Indonesia’s digital future. With technology adoption accelerating across sectors, ensuring data protection is a cornerstone of building trust and resilience in the digital economy.

Cisometric reiterated its commitment to educating the public and future professionals about cybersecurity. Through initiatives like this workshop and programs such as the Cisometric Academy, we aim to:

  • Raise awareness about cybersecurity threats and best practices.

  • Equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age.

  • Collaborate with partners like Generation Girl to ensure that young, talented individuals—especially women—have access to opportunities in cybersecurity.

By the end of the session, participants left with a deeper understanding of Personal Data Privacy, the significance of UU PDP, and the opportunities that lie ahead in this dynamic field.
